The festive season has arrived at the Melbourne Wholesale Flower Market, which is brimming with seasonal gift and decoration ideas. The main focus is on the green and red colour schemes for Christmas, with the ever popular White Christmas Lilies in abundance in various lengths of bloom.

One of the very few large cut flowers that is blue – a very rare combination. Delphiniums are larger and more showy than larkspurs, and have longer stems. Delphiniums come in blue, white and purple, but there are now new varieties, called

Tansy

Tansy has long been used as a medicinal herb, and is also an attractive yellow button shaped cut flower. Leaves are typical of the Aster family: dark green and finely divided, alternate, 10-15 cm long and fernlike in appearance. The roundish, button-shaped bright yellow flowers are produced in terminal clusters from mid to late summer.

All species of tansy are toxic, so wear gloves and take care when handling.

JANUARY - Carnation
Long the most popular cut flower after the rose, the carnation’s star has been on the wane over the past twenty years or so. In 2004 carnations were the 10th most popular flower sold at Aalsmeer, but they remain a very popular traditional flower in England, where they have been sold since at least the 16th century. They seem to be making a comeback, however, which is not surprising as this flower has a huge range of strong colours, is long-lasting and is scented.
