Wholesale markets are where retail businesses such as florists can source fresh produce from growers and wholesalers on a daily basis.

There are six central wholesale produce markets in Australia. Most central wholesale markets trade during the early hours of the morning so that flowers can be delivered fresh each day to meet business and consumer needs.

Wholesale central markets provide an efficient distribution system for growers, wholesalers and florists. They trade in bulk quantities of fresh flowers spanning many hundreds of flower types and varieties. They fulfil a crucial role in ensuring that Australian growers have access to a variety of business customers. Importantly, they also provide a mechanism for determining price based on supply and demand forces.

Wholesale buying is only available to registered businesses. If you are a member of the public and wish to enquire about where to purchase fresh produce please consult our florist guide that includes florists, retail markets and other independent retail outlets that source their flowers through the central market system.

Melbourne Markets

The Melbourne Markets, Victoria's centre for the wholesaling of fruit, vegetables and flowers, covers 33ha and is located just five minutes from the Melbourne CBD. With a turnover of over $1.5B AUD pa, the Market is the largest wholesale fresh produce complex in Victoria. More that 7,000 people use the Markets, which provide facilities for growers, wholesalers, retailers, florists, processors and food service groups. The site includes the Wholesale Fruit & Vegetable Market, the National Flower Centre and extensive warehouse facilities.
