Mother's Day

In Australia, Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It is traditionally associated with giving fresh flowers to Mothers as a symbol of gratitude and love. It is one of the biggest flower-trading days with many florists working around the clock to meet the needs of their customers.

Mother's Day acknowledges the special role and contribution of women in bringing children into the world and the many sacrifices made in order to nurture and care for children as they grow into adulthood.

Mother's Day is a time to say thanks to your Mum in a very special way for all that she has done for you with a beautiful bouquet or arrangement of fresh flowers.

While white flowers, in particular white chrysanthemums, have been traditionally associated with Mother's Day in Australia, other flowers and colours have recently challenged the Chrysanthemum as the most popular flower for Mother's Day. Our florists suggest you choose flower varieties and colours that you think your Mum will like. Regardless of colour or variety, fresh flowers given with love at Mother's Day are bound to make your Mum feel extra special.

Floral Ideas for Mother’s Day

Flowers are the most natural gift you can give your mother for this special day. Whether they be traditional white chrysanthemums or a rainbow of colour, fresh flowers are the most adaptable present as they can be designed with each mother’s individual taste and style in mind.

Breakfast in bed is a great idea for the mother who loves a sleep-in, and to make that breakfast tray extra special, decorate it with fresh flowers.

Surprise your Mum when she wakes up with vases filled with fresh flowers in your living room, kitchen, even the bathroom. Nothing is more beautiful and fragrant than  fresh flowers. The floral scent will awaken her senses and the flowers themselves will brighten the home.

Origins

The tradition of celebrating Mother's Day has its origins in ancient Greece where the Athenians paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods and later in 17th century England, where Mothering Sunday was celebrated by Christians on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In 1872 in America, Julia Ward Howe authoress of the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested the idea of Mother's Day but it wasn't until 1914 through the efforts of Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, that the Day was officially recognised nationally to be celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May.

The Perfect Way To Say I Love You

In today’s world we can often be too busy to recognise the importance of our loved ones. So, take the opportunity to tell your Mum how much you care on Mother’s Day by giving her fresh flowers.

Order in advance or drop in to your local florist for that special bouquet or arrangement. Your Mum will be delighted.
