Chinese Boxthorn

Botanical Name:

Lycium chinense

General Description/History:

Chinese Boxthorn is a spiny evergreen shrub and a member of the nightshade family. The small round leaves are considered to have immune enhancing properties and are cooked in soups, mainly in winter to combat chest infections. The thorny stems are discarded after the leaves have been stripped. The wolfberry (the dried fruit of this plant) can be found in many Chinese herbal mixtures to treat anything from skin irritations to anaemia.
