General Description/History: - also called ‘tarap’
- the fruit of the marang is related to jackfruit and breadfruit and is native to Borneo
- has a sweet odour not as strong as a durian
- the very distinctive fruit is large, round to oblong, 15-20 cm long and 13 cm wide, and weighs up to 1 kg
- yellow green turning to brown as they ripen
- the thick brown rind is covered with short soft spines, which become hard and brittle as the fruit matures
- the interior of the fruit is succulent, white and contains many oval shaped and creased grape-like seed covers attached to a brown pithy core
- has a very sweet juicy taste like a guava, but better tasting
- marangs must be eaten within 2 to 3 hours after opening as they discolour and lose flavour quickly
