Wholesale markets are where businesses such as greengrocers, restaurants, catering companies and food service companies can source fresh produce from growers and wholesalers on a daily basis.
There are six central wholesale produce markets in Australia. Most central wholesale markets trade during the early hours of the morning so that produce can be delivered fresh each day to meet business and consumer needs.
Wholesale central markets provide an efficient distribution system for growers, wholesalers and retailers. They trade in vast quantities of fresh produce spanning many hundreds of produce types and varieties. They fulfil a crucial role in ensuring that Australian growers have access to a variety of business customers. Importantly, they also provide a mechanism for determining price based on supply and demand forces.

Melbourne Markets
The Melbourne Markets, Victoria's centre for the wholesaling of fruit, vegetables and flowers, covers 33ha and is located just five minutes from the Melbourne CBD. With a turnover of over $1.5B pa, the Market is the largest wholesale fresh produce complex in Victoria. More that 7,000 people use the Markets, which provides facilities for growers, wholesalers, retailers, florists, processors and food service groups. The site includes the Wholesale Fruit& Vegetable Market, the National Flower Centre and extensive warehouse facilities.

Brisbane Markets Limited
The Brisbane Markets is situated on 72ha at Rocklea, 11km from the Brisbane CBD. It has an annual turnover of over 650,000 tonnes of produce valued at more than $700M. The Brisbane Markets provides facilities for fruit and vegetable wholesalers, retailers, food processors, exporters and support businesses. The Markets are owned and operated by Brisbane Markets Limited, an industry-based company with shareholders including growers, wholesalers, secondary wholesalers, retailers and the industry organisation Brismark.
